India’s plant-enthusiast community has been coming alive in public parks thanks to Plantohlics, a mobile app that connects gardening lovers. In one of its most recent gatherings at Sambhaji Udyan in Pune, about 100 plant lovers turned up with saplings in hand to swap plants, share tips and stories, and simply enjoy each other’s company. These events, organized under the Plantohlics banner, are casual plant-swapping parties – a “candy store” of greenery – where newcomers and seasoned gardeners alike mingle over potted cuttings and blooming friends. They are entirely free to attend and focus on human connection: participants chat about pruning and potting, inspect each other’s foliage, and even donate extra plants to those who need them. As one organizer notes, the meet-ups are all about swapping and giving away extra plants, reinforcing that the goal is community enrichment rather than commerce.
The events grew out of Plantohlics’ larger mission. The app was founded by Bratati Bhattacharya Sen, a plant lover herself, who in 2019 started a Facebook group called Plantohlics Gardening Ideas and More to unite hobbyist gardeners. That group quickly became “a magnet for million plant addicts”, with thousands of earth-lovers sharing tips every day. In 2022, she launched the Plantohlics mobile app to expand this network. Today, Plantohlics is a platform where plant lovers can meet up, swap or sell plants, and learn from real gardening experts. In other words, it brings the spirit of those local meet-ups onto your phone: members can plan or join a plant meet, and even book a live appointment with a gardening expert when their prized plant needs help.
Over the course of 10-12 plant meet-ups, the community has gathered across locations including Kharghar, Nerul and Belapur in Navi Mumbai, Empress Garden in Pune, Lucknow and Lodhi Garden in Delhi. The idea has now grown beyond Plantohlics-organized gatherings, as anyone using the app can post their own plant event and invite fellow plant lovers to join.
Beyond the gatherings, Plantohlics offers the features a plant lover could want. Through the app, users can “post, sell, donate, exchange house plants” and source exotic varieties from nearby enthusiasts. The interface encourages swapping and sharing: you can list extra cuttings to trade or give away, chat with fellow members, or accept free plants that others have donated. The emphasis is on real connections and hands-on guidance – the app promotes “first-hand tips, no AI or generic advice” from experienced growers. In practice, this means you are not simply searching through generic information but connecting with someone who may have faced the same pest, watering or plant-care problem. Plantohlics also has an eco-friendly store where users can earn in-app coins and redeem them for sustainable home décor.
The fun of these plant meet-ups lies in how naturally conversations begin. People walk in with plants, discover new varieties, exchange cuttings, discuss what is growing well at home and often leave with something new to care for. For many, it is as much about meeting fellow plant lovers and enjoying a relaxed day outdoors as it is about taking home a new plant.
These meet-ups and features reflect a deeper purpose: building social bonds and well-being through gardening. Gardening can be a personal and calming hobby, but it can also bring people together when there is an opportunity to share it. By organizing live gatherings, Plantohlics gives people a chance to step outdoors, talk about plants, exchange what they have grown and meet others who share their passion. The result is a community that feels less like a digital network and more like a group of people connected by something they genuinely enjoy.
At its heart, the Plantohlics meet-up is more than just a plant swap – it is a community event built around conversation, sharing and the simple happiness that comes from gardening. As the company puts it, its mission is to “connect more and more people through gardening and share happiness”. With its friendly events and feature-filled app, including plant swaps, expert advice, buying and selling, donations and eco-friendly products, Plantohlics is helping plant lovers grow not just gardens, but friendships and a stronger sense of community as well.
