Bilal Ahmad Bhat is a senior Investigative multimedia journalist, documentary filmmaker, social reformer and political/conflict analyst working across South Asia. With more than 12 years of experience, he has worked with and contributed to leading national and international news organisations, including Al Jazeera English, The Times of India, The Milli Gazette, IndiaTomorrow.net, Hindustan Times, Greater Kashmir, Kashmir Narrator, The Citizen, and Awami Reporter.
His journalism focuses on human rights, environmental issues, climate change, breaking news and public policy. His work combines field reporting with multimedia production, allowing him to document complex social and environmental issues through video, investigative reporting and digital storytelling.
Bhat is also a documentary filmmaker. His documentary “Mountain Mothers: Markhor Conservation in J&K” (2018), in which he served as Assistant Director, received a Jury Special Award at the IMF Mountain Film Festival.
Beyond journalism, Bhat has been involved in international programmes and civil-society initiatives. He has served as a UN Delegate four times, representing civil society in Geneva and Kuala Lumpur with a focus on SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 16 (Peace & Justice). He has also been associated with Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI), serving as a YHRI Delegate in Kathmandu, Nepal, and later as a YHRI Programme Coordinator for Bangladesh and India, working on educational programming related to human rights and global citizenship.
His international professional exposure also includes the SAMED South Asia Media Training Program in Istanbul, Turkey. He was also a selected participant in the EU–Arab Masters Programme in Democracy and Human Rights at the University of Saint Joseph, an Europe Union funded programme. He is the first Asian who got selected for this program.
Environmental conservation remains an important area of Bhat’s public work and advocacy in Kashmir. He has been vocal about the protection of Kashmir’s fragile ecosystems, including the Amarnath Ji Shrine Cave ecosystem, Dal Lake and other environmentally sensitive zones. His environmental focus reflects his broader interest in climate change, conservation and sustainable development.
Bhat's work and public service have received national and international recognition. His honours include the International Excellence Award in Journalism from the Indian Journalist Association in 2023, the Josh-e-Junoon Award for courageous journalism in 2015, and the International Bravery Award for extraordinary personal courage and active rescue operations during the catastrophic Kashmir floods in 2014. He also received a Token of Appreciation from the Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu & Kashmir, for volunteer service.
