Dr. Thejo Kumari Amudala: A Leader in Public Health and Lifelong Learning at IIMs

In a recent interview near the Indian Institutes of Management  Ahmedabad (IIMA), Dr. Thejo Kumari Amudala shared insights about her ongoing dedication to public health and continuous learning. Renowned for her groundbreaking achievements and unwavering dedication to societal well-being, Dr. Amudala has received numerous prestigious awards, including the “Missile Man” Award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Icon Award, and the Real Super Hero Award from the United Nations. She has also been honored with the Nelson Mandela Noble Peace, Gandhi Peace  recognizing her efforts in promoting peace and equality, and the Gandhi Peace Prize and Padma Bhushan for her contributions to society.

Dr. Amudala’s commitment to learning is evident. Many years ago, she completed a management course at IIMs one of India’s top-ranked business schools. Recently, she returned to an Indian Institute Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) to further her education in Healthcare and Hospital Management. She explained that healthcare is an ever-evolving field, and staying updated is crucial to making a meaningful impact.

In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Amudala has been actively involved in opening clinics to provide free treatment to the poor.  She believes access to healthcare should be a fundamental right, not a privilege. These clinics aim to ensure that everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status, can receive necessary medical attention.

Her work has also focused on food safety, which she sees as part of her broader vision for public health. Dr. Amudala explained that public health is a holistic concept, encompassing both treatment and prevention through education and awareness. Her recommendations on food safety practices help prevent health issues before they arise.

Despite being over 40 years old, Dr. Amudala continues to pursue education and public service. She shared that seeing the positive impact of her work on people’s lives is her greatest reward, motivating her to keep pushing forward. There’s always more to learn and more ways to contribute, and that drive keeps her going.
