Punjab's agricultural challenges are usually measured in crop yields, debt, or groundwater levels. Less frequently measured is their effect on human capital. In rural classrooms across Punjab, educators are witnessing another consequence of agrarian distress: the growing risk that financial shocks at home will interrupt a child's education.
For nearly four decades, The Kalgidhar Society has worked alongside farming communities across rural Punjab through its network of 130 Akal Academies, educating more than 75,000 students across five northern states. Over the years, one reality has become increasingly clear: when agriculture struggles, the consequences do not stop at the farm. They enter homes, shape educational decisions, and determine whether many children can continue learning.
Public discourse around Punjab's agrarian crisis understandably focuses on indebtedness, declining farm incomes, groundwater depletion, climate uncertainty, and agricultural policy. These are pressing issues that demand sustained attention.
Yet another question deserves equal consideration.
What happens to children when farming families experience prolonged financial distress?
For many households, education becomes the first difficult compromise. School expenses begin competing with daily necessities. Higher education is postponed. Some children leave school altogether. A crisis that begins in agriculture gradually becomes a crisis of human capital.
This matters because education remains one of the strongest drivers of social and economic mobility. When children are forced to discontinue their education, the impact extends well beyond one family. It affects workforce participation, productivity, innovation, and the long-term resilience of rural communities.
This reality is reflected in classrooms across rural Punjab.
One student, Jashanpreet Kaur, offers a powerful example.
In 2026, she appeared for the CBSE Class X Board Examination and scored 96.6 percent.
Viewed in isolation, it is an outstanding academic achievement.
Viewed in the context of her life, it represents something much greater.
Jashanpreet lost her father, Angraj Singh, to the agrarian crisis that continues to affect farming families across Punjab. Like many children facing such personal tragedy, her education could easily have been interrupted by financial hardship.
Instead, she remained in school.
She completed Class X.
She scored 96.6 percent.
Behind that achievement lies another story—one of educational continuity.
Jashanpreet is supported through EducateToSave, The Kalgidhar Society's child sponsorship initiative and one of India's largest rural education sponsorship programmes. The initiative ensures that children from financially vulnerable families can continue their education despite circumstances beyond their control. By removing financial barriers, it allows students to remain focused on learning rather than worrying whether they will be able to stay in school.
Her achievement illustrates an important principle: academic ability rarely disappears because of financial hardship. Opportunity often does.
Jashanpreet is not an isolated success story.
Across The Kalgidhar Society's rural education network, EducateToSave.com currently supports more than 33,900 students receiving free or subsidised education, including 1,002 children from farming families. Among them are 49 students who have lost a parent to the agrarian crisis.
During the 2026 CBSE Board examinations, 75 students from farming families appeared for Class X and Class XII examinations. Fourteen scored above 90 percent, while every one of the 29 Class X students secured more than 80 percent.

At the Class XII level, students from farming families continued the trend, with Gurnoor Kaur scoring 95.2 percent, followed by Jasmeet Kaur (92%), Ramanpreet Kaur (91.4%), Mandeep Kaur (90.8%), Parmeet Kaur (90.2%), and Veerman Singh (90%).
These outcomes should not be interpreted as evidence that educational institutions can solve Punjab's agricultural challenges.
They cannot.
Agrarian distress requires comprehensive responses through agricultural reforms, climate resilience, improved market access, sustainable farming practices, financial inclusion, and rural economic development.
What education can do, however, is prevent one crisis from creating another.
Evidence from around the world consistently shows that household financial shocks increase the likelihood of interrupted education, lower learning outcomes, and long-term economic disadvantage. Every child who leaves school prematurely represents lost human potential—not only for the individual but also for society.
Conversely, every child who completes a quality education despite adversity becomes an investment in the future workforce, stronger communities, and a more resilient rural economy.
The experience of The Kalgidhar Society across nearly four decades suggests that educational continuity is one of the most effective forms of social resilience. When children remain connected to quality schools, dedicated teachers, and sustained sponsorship, they continue to demonstrate extraordinary determination regardless of the circumstances they face at home.
Success in education should therefore be measured not only by examination scores but also by continuity.
Can a child remain in school after losing a parent?
Can financial hardship be prevented from becoming educational hardship?
Can communities create systems that protect learning even during periods of crisis?
These questions are becoming increasingly important as India seeks to strengthen its human capital while reducing rural inequality.
Punjab's farmers have nourished the nation for generations. Ensuring that their children have uninterrupted access to quality education is not simply an act of compassion—it is an investment in India's future.
Jashanpreet Kaur's 96.6 percent is therefore more than an examination result.
It is evidence that when resilience is matched with opportunity, and when communities choose to stand beside vulnerable children, extraordinary outcomes become possible.
A farming crisis may begin in the field.
It should never be allowed to determine a child's future.
