Hyderabad, March 2, 2025: In a spiritually enriching session held yesterday evening, renowned Islamic Scholar and community leader, Adv. Nizam A. Khan, delivered an insightful lecture on the virtues and significance of Ramzaan. The lecture, which took place at the Studios of ALIF Tv, Hyderabad, attracted a large gathering of enthusiastic Muslims eager to learn about the true essence of the holy month of Ramzaan, as outlined in the Quran and Hadith.
With a profound understanding of Islamic teachings, Adv. Nizam A. Khan emphasized the multifaceted spiritual and physical benefits of Ramzaan, urging Muslims to embrace this sacred month with reverence, devotion, and self-reflection. Drawing from authentic sources like the Quran and Hadith, he highlighted the significance of fasting, Tarawee, Zakat, Sehri, Iftar, Fitra, and the roles of women and children during this blessed time.
The Virtue of Ramzaan and the Act of Fasting
Adv. Nizam A. Khan began the lecture by stressing the importance of fasting (Sawm) in Ramzaan, stating that fasting is not merely a physical act of abstaining from food and drink but a deep spiritual exercise designed to purify the soul. He reminded the audience of the Quranic verse: "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous." (Al-Baqarah 2:183).
"The ultimate goal of fasting," Adv. Nizam A. Khan explained, "is to attain taqwa—God-consciousness. Fasting teaches patience, self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and gratitude for the countless blessings bestowed upon us by Allah." He further emphasized that fasting in Ramzaan is an opportunity to cleanse oneself from worldly distractions, allowing for an intense focus on worship and self-improvement.
The Importance of Tarawee Prayer
As part of the lecture, Adv. Nizam A. Khan also spoke about the significance of the Tarawee prayer during Ramzaan. This special prayer, offered in the night after Isha, was practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and is considered an act of great reward.
“Ramzaan is a time when Muslims should make a concerted effort to increase their acts of worship,” said Adv. Nizam A. Khan. “Performing Tarawee not only strengthens our relationship with Allah but also serves as a reminder of His mercy, for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, ‘Whoever prays during Ramzaan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven’” (Sahih Bukhari).
Adv. Nizam A. Khan encouraged Muslims to take full advantage of the opportunity to pray Tarawee with sincerity and dedication, reflecting on the meanings of the Quranic verses as they are recited during these prayers.
The Role of Zakat and Fitra in Ramzaan
A crucial part of the lecture was dedicated to the significance of Zakat and Fitra in Ramzaan. Adv. Nizam A. Khan emphasized that Ramzaan is not only about personal devotion but also about helping others, particularly the less fortunate. He encouraged the audience to fulfil their Zakat obligations and give generously, as giving in Ramzaan brings manifold rewards.
“Zakat purifies wealth and supports the needy,” said Adv. Nizam A. Khan. “The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, ‘Charity does not decrease wealth.’ Therefore, the act of giving, especially in Ramzaan, is not just an act of charity but one of spiritual elevation.”
He also discussed the importance of Fitra, the obligatory charity given at the end of Ramzaan before Eid, which ensures that the poor and needy can partake in the celebrations of Eid. "Fitra is a symbol of gratitude and compassion, reminding us of the importance of sharing our blessings with others," he added.
The Blessing of Sehri and Iftar
Adv. Nizam A. Khan took time to emphasize the virtues of Sehri (the pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (the meal to break the fast). He explained that both of these acts hold spiritual significance. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was reported to have said, "Partake in Sehri, for indeed there is a blessing in it" (Sahih Bukhari).
"Sehri not only helps us maintain strength during the day but also serves as a reminder of Allah’s mercy and sustenance," Adv. Nizam A. Khan noted. "It is a blessed meal, and consuming it has great rewards."
Similarly, Iftar, the moment when Muslims break their fast at sunset, was also highlighted as a moment of great reward. Adv. Nizam A. Khan quoted the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who said, "When a fasting person breaks their fast, they will have their sins forgiven and their prayers accepted" (Sunan Ibn Majah). He encouraged everyone to share their Iftar meals with others, fostering a sense of community and solidarity during the holy month.
Women and Children in Ramzaan
One of the most insightful parts of the lecture came when Adv. Nizam A. Khan discussed the roles of women and children during Ramzaan. He highlighted the importance of making Ramzaan a family affair, where everyone, including women and children, is encouraged to participate in acts of worship and self-improvement.
"Women have a vital role in the spiritual atmosphere of Ramzaan," Adv. Nizam A. Khan stated. "The Quran and Hadith have consistently highlighted the equal spiritual status of men and women, and both have the same opportunity to earn the pleasure of Allah during this month."
He also spoke of the importance of nurturing the spirituality of children during Ramzaan, teaching them the value of fasting, prayer, and charity from a young age. "Ramzaan is a time to instil in our children the core values of Islam, so that they grow up with a deep sense of faith and commitment to Allah."
The Spiritual Journey of Umrah in Ramzaan
Adv. Nizam A. Khan further elaborated on the importance of Umrah during Ramzaan, calling it one of the greatest spiritual journeys a Muslim can undertake. He quoted the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who said, "The reward for an accepted Umrah is no less than the reward for Hajj" (Sahih Bukhari).
"Performing Umrah during Ramzaan," Adv. Nizam A. Khan continued, "is a unique opportunity to earn unparalleled rewards. The spiritual elevation gained from praying in the sacred cities of Makkah and Madinah during this blessed month is something every Muslim should aspire to."
A Call for Transformation
In his concluding remarks, Adv. Nizam A. Khan called upon the audience to use the month of Ramzaan as a catalyst for spiritual transformation. "Ramzaan is not merely about fasting and worshiping for one month. It is an opportunity to reset our relationship with Allah and reflect on how we can lead more righteous lives throughout the year."
He encouraged everyone to not only focus on the external aspects of Ramzaan but to purify their hearts and minds, making lasting changes that would benefit both their spiritual and worldly lives. "Let this Ramzaan be the beginning of a new chapter of greater devotion, compassion, and piety," Adv. Nizam A. Khan urged.
