Pune Pioneers FC Appoint Former East Bengal Goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh as Goalkeeping Coach

Former Tata Football Academy graduate and I-League goalkeeper joins Pune Pioneers FC, bringing extensive playing experience and nearly a decade of specialist goalkeeping coaching experience to the club.

Pune Pioneers Football Club have strengthened their coaching department with the appointment of former professional goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh as their new Goalkeeping Coach. The appointment represents another step in the club’s efforts to build a comprehensive football development structure, with dedicated specialist coaching across different positions and age groups.

Ghosh arrives in Pune with an extensive background in Indian football, having represented several established clubs during his playing career, including East Bengal FC, Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti and Royal Wahingdoh FC. A graduate of the prestigious Tata Football Academy, he brings experience from the professional game as well as several years of coaching and developing goalkeepers.

Following his East Bengal stint, Ghosh represented Air India FC in the I-League before joining Mumbai Tigers for the 2012–13 season, where he competed in the I-League Second Division. He was also part of the Mumbai Tigers squad that finished as Durand Cup

runners-up.

His subsequent playing career included spells with Sreebhumi Samiti and Aryan FC before joining Royal Wahingdoh FC. During the 2014–15 season, Royal Wahingdoh finished third in the I-League, adding another significant experience to his professional journey.

Success at youth level and exposure to prominent coaches

Before establishing himself in senior football, Ghosh enjoyed considerable success at youth level.

He was part of the Bengal U-16 team that won the National Championship in 2002 and the Bengal U-19 team that secured the Dr B.C. Roy Trophy in 2006. His development also included international exposure through Tata Football Academy’s tour to England and the Wells Cup triumph in 2005, followed by an India U-19 camp and tour to Sri Lanka in 2006.

Throughout his playing career, Ghosh had the opportunity to work under several established names in Indian football, including Subhash Bhowmick, Bimal Ghosh, Santosh Kashyap, Godfrey Pereira and Philippe De Ridder.

These experiences across different clubs, competitions and coaching environments have contributed to the professional perspective he now brings into his coaching career.

Building a career in specialist goalkeeping coaching

After his playing career, Ghosh transitioned into coaching, focusing on the specialised requirements of goalkeeper development.

He began his coaching journey with the Hooghly District Sports Association in 2017–18 and subsequently worked with the Kalyani Football League. His coaching assignments have included Kolkata Soccer Academy, Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC, George Telegraph FC and SKM Sports Foundation.

His experience spans different levels of competitive football, including the Calcutta Football League, Reliance Development League and AIFF U-17 Youth League.

Ghosh holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence and brings nearly a decade of experience in goalkeeper coaching and development.

A dedicated focus on goalkeeper development at Pune Pioneers FC

The appointment reflects Pune Pioneers FC’s emphasis on providing specialised coaching within its academy structure.

Goalkeeping is a unique position that requires a combination of technical ability, physical preparation, tactical awareness, communication and decision-making. Developing these qualities requires a structured approach and consistent attention from coaches who understand the specific demands of the position.

With Ghosh overseeing goalkeepers across all age groups, the club aims to establish greater continuity in the way young goalkeepers are developed throughout their academy journey.

His initial training sessions at the club have been positively received by players, while fellow coaches have also observed encouraging improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.

Interestingly, Ghosh and Pune Pioneers FC Club Director Ryan Roy Shah had previously crossed paths at Mumbai Tigers during the 2012–13 season, when Ghosh was part of the senior squad and Shah was involved with the youth setup.

For Ghosh, relocating from Kolkata to Pune also represents a significant personal commitment. His wife and young child remain in Kolkata as he begins this new professional chapter, reflecting the importance he places on the opportunity and the potential of the project.

Pune Pioneers FC operate a residential football academy in Wagholi alongside a

non-residential evening academy programme. The club’s wider development structure focuses on combining professional football coaching with education, physical development, performance support and regular competitive opportunities.

The arrival of an experienced former professional goalkeeper adds another specialist dimension to that structure.

With Avijit Ghosh now leading its goalkeeping programme, Pune Pioneers FC will look to strengthen the development pathway for young goalkeepers and provide them with the technical guidance and professional understanding required to progress in competitive football.
