The change can be seen across different age groups. Gen Z travellers are exploring new destinations and looking for experiences that match their interests. Couples are choosing private getaways, families are planning holidays together, and more people are travelling solo. Groups of friends are also making weekend trips and short holidays a regular part of their lives.
Pratik believes the COVID-19 pandemic played an important role in changing people's outlook towards travel. After spending long periods indoors, people began giving more importance to outdoor experiences, family time and exploring new places. This interest has continued even after travel returned to normal.
The numbers also reflect this growth. According to UN Tourism, approximately 1.52 billion international tourist arrivals were recorded worldwide in 2025, an increase of 4% over the previous year.
India is also seeing a change in the way people choose their accommodation. Travellers are no longer looking only at traditional hotels. Luxury villas, private holiday homes, boutique stays, homestays, camping, glamping and nature retreats are becoming popular choices.
A 2026 report by Booking dot com and VIDEC Consultants estimates that India's alternative accommodation market could reach approximately ₹41,500 crore in gross booking value by FY2029.
"People are increasingly choosing accommodation based on the experience it offers. A family may prefer a private villa, couples may look for peaceful boutique properties, while groups of friends may choose camps, resorts or holiday homes. The stay itself is becoming an important part of the holiday," explains Pratik Nagare.
Earlier, travel required weeks of planning. Today, Gen Z, college students, working professionals, couples, families and groups of friends are making spontaneous last minute plans at the office, over dinner, while talking or even during lectures. They are planning outings to nearby cities and popular destinations for quick breaks from their daily routines and exploring new places. Travel is no longer about waiting for holidays; people are making it happen whenever they find an opportunity.
This shift is also creating opportunities for smaller hospitality businesses and emerging tourist destinations. Places beyond major cities are attracting attention as people explore new locations for weekend breaks and longer holidays. Better road connectivity, digital platforms and easier access to travel information are helping people discover these places.
According to Pratik Nagare, the opportunity for India's hospitality industry extends well beyond luxury travel. Different travellers have different budgets, interests and reasons to travel. From affordable homestays to premium villas and outdoor experiences, there is room for many types of businesses to grow.
However, growth also brings responsibilities. Travellers expect clean properties, good service, comfortable stays, fair pricing and reliable experiences. Hospitality businesses will need to focus on these expectations to build long term trust.
Looking ahead, Pratik sees an exciting future for India's hospitality sector, with travel becoming more personal and experience driven.
"People are not just travelling to visit new places. They are travelling to spend time, create memories and experience life differently. This change will continue to shape the future of hospitality," concludes Pratik Nagare.
