Mangrove Ecosystems: Nature's Living Shield Against Climate Change and Coastal Disasters

Mangrove ecosystems are among the world's most valuable coastal ecosystems. Occupying the narrow zone where land meets the sea, mangrove forests protect coastlines, sustain biodiversity, support fisheries, store vast amounts of carbon, and provide livelihoods for millions of people. Despite occupying less than one percent of the Earth's tropical forests, mangroves deliver ecosystem services worth billions of dollars annually.

Across the world, these unique forests are disappearing at an alarming rate because of industrialization, urban expansion, pollution, aquaculture, and climate change. Their destruction not only threatens biodiversity but also exposes coastal communities to cyclones, storm surges, flooding, erosion, and sea-level rise.
