An honest man loses his job. A kind woman is betrayed by someone she trusted. A hard-working family faces one setback after another, while others seem to get lucky without trying.
And somewhere in our minds, the same question rises: Why me? Is this my destiny? Was it already written? Or did I do something to deserve this?
Almost everyone has asked these questions at some point in life. Yet most of us never find a satisfying answer. We either blame fate and give up, or blame ourselves and feel crushed.
But what if some of what we call destiny isn’t destiny at all?
Destiny vs FreeWill: Understanding What You Control and What You Don’t, by Amazon bestselling author Tejash Shah, offers a third way. And it does so not through a lecture, but through a conversation over a cup of chai.
Two Friends, One Cup of Chai, and Life’s Biggest Question
The book unfolds as a dialogue between two friends. The Questioner represents the human mind: curious, restless and full of doubts. He asks the questions that many of us carry within. If everything is already written, why should I try at all?
The Guide represents the observing mind: calm, clear and patient. He does not preach. He answers with everyday examples, the kind we live through at home, at work and in our relationships.
Neither character has a name, a profession or a background. That is deliberate. Every reader can sit in either chair.
Across seventeen chapters, the conversation unfolds in six stages: The Beginning, Destiny, FreeWill, Karma, Together and Closure. Chapter titles such as “Why People Blame Destiny”, “When FreeWill Slowly Turns Into Destiny” and “The Power of Our Inner World” reflect how closely the discussion connects with everyday life.
The Answer Most People Don’t Expect
The book’s central idea is surprisingly simple. Destiny is what comes to us: our birth, our family, the weather, a job loss we never saw coming. FreeWill is how we respond to it.
“Destiny is what life gives you,” Shah writes. “FreeWill is what you give back.”
In other words, bad things may happen to good people. That part is not always in our hands. But even when we cannot control what happens to us, we can still make choices about how we respond and the direction we take.
The book also offers a different perspective on karma. Here, karma is not presented as a system of reward and punishment, but as cause and effect. Many things we blame on destiny, the book suggests, may actually be habits we have developed ourselves, often without realising it.
“Automatic doesn’t mean destiny. It means habit,” the Guide explains. “If you created a habit, you can uncreate it.”
Ancient Wisdom, Without the Heavy Philosophy
Destiny vs FreeWill draws on the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, Osho and Vipassana meditation. Yet it does not promote any religion, and it needs no spiritual or philosophical background. Anyone can follow it, from students and parents to professionals going through a difficult time.
The book ends on a light-hearted note, leaving readers not with fear about fate, but with a sense of calm and perspective. As Shah puts it: “Destiny gives the moment. FreeWill gives the meaning.”
What Readers Are Saying
Readers have appreciated the book’s conversational style and practical approach to complex questions. One reader wrote, “This book doesn’t lecture or preach.” Another said it “helped me understand karma and freewill without confusion or heavy philosophy.” A third wrote, “Every chapter made me pause and reflect.”
Perhaps one reader captured the experience best: “It stays with you even after you’ve finished reading.”
