Devotees in the national capital are preparing for one of the grandest celebrations of Lord Jagannath outside Odisha as the 59th Rath Yatra Mahotsav will be held at Shri Jagannath Mandir, Thyagraj Nagar, on 16 July 2026. This year's celebrations promise to be especially significant with several first-of-their-kind initiatives inspired by the centuries-old traditions of Puri.
The annual Rath Yatra has become one of Delhi's most anticipated spiritual and cultural events, bringing together devotees from across the country. Organizers expect tens of thousands of visitors to participate in the sacred procession and the series of devotional activities planned over the course of the festival.
One of the biggest highlights of this year's Mahotsav is the introduction of three individual chariots dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. Following the revered customs of the Jagannath Temple in Puri, the three beautifully crafted Raths—Nandighosh, Taladhwaja, and Devadalana—will carry the deities separately during the procession. This marks a historic milestone, making it the first celebration in the Delhi-NCR region to adopt this traditional format.
Adding a meaningful social message to the religious event, the organizers have announced that the Devadalana Rath, carrying Devi Subhadra, will be pulled exclusively by women devotees. The initiative has been introduced to symbolize women's empowerment and gender equality while encouraging greater participation of women in religious and community celebrations.
The Rath Yatra will begin with the sacred Pahandi ceremony, during which the deities will be ceremonially brought out from the sanctum and placed on their respective chariots. After the traditional rituals are completed, the ceremonial Chhera Pahanra will be performed by the designated Gajapati representative before the grand procession commences.
The procession will travel through several important roads surrounding Thyagraj Nagar, offering devotees an opportunity to seek the blessings of the Holy Trinity. Thousands of devotees are expected to accompany the chariots while singing devotional hymns, chanting the names of Lord Jagannath, and participating in the joyous celebrations.
Following the procession, the deities will be taken to a specially constructed Gundicha Mandir, where They will remain during Their annual stay away from the main temple. The temporary shrine has been designed to reflect the architectural beauty and spiritual atmosphere of the original Gundicha Temple in Puri, allowing devotees in Delhi to experience an authentic Rath Yatra ambience without leaving the capital.
The celebrations will continue with an 11-day Rath Yatra Mahotsav, featuring devotional and cultural programmes every evening. The festival aims to showcase India's rich artistic heritage through performances of classical and folk dance traditions, devotional music, and cultural presentations by artists from different parts of the country.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy various family-oriented activities, including competitions in dance, music, drawing, devotional singing, and other cultural events for children and women. Organizers believe these programmes will help connect younger generations with India's spiritual and cultural traditions while encouraging community participation.
To ensure a comfortable experience for the large gathering, the temple management has made extensive arrangements for security, medical services, drinking water, sanitation, and weather relief measures. Volunteers will also assist devotees throughout the celebrations, while free distribution of Anna Prasad will continue during the Mahotsav.
Traditional cultural troupes will perform martial arts demonstrations and folk performances during the Rath Yatra procession, creating a vibrant atmosphere that blends devotion with India's diverse cultural heritage. Every evening of the festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors eager to witness performances representing Odisha and other regions of the country.
Preparations for the festival began with the observance of Snana Purnima, one of the important rituals associated with Lord Jagannath. Following the ceremonial bathing of the deities and the offering of Chhapan Bhog, the deities entered the sacred period of Anasara, during which They remain in seclusion before reappearing for the Rath Yatra.
The temple management has also invited several distinguished public representatives, community leaders, and dignitaries to participate in the celebrations, reflecting the growing prominence of the event in Delhi's cultural and spiritual calendar.
As preparations enter their final stages, organizers have appealed to devotees, volunteers, and well-wishers to actively participate in the celebrations and contribute towards the successful organization of the Mahotsav.
