These figures reveal that entrepreneurs are increasingly choosing company registration online, aided by digital services provided by the government, ease of compliance, and policies that promote entrepreneurship.
A New Era of Business Formalization
Many small businesses in India remained on the periphery of the formal economy for decades. While this reduced paperwork, it also meant that they had fewer resources for loans, investors, government tenders, and new markets.
That's, however, rapidly changing.
Now, it has become easier, faster, and digital to register a business. In fact, several legal formalities like company incorporation, GST registration, and trademark registration can be done online by entrepreneurs. As the registration procedure has been streamlined, business owners have now started seeing it as an opportunity and not a duty.
As per the Ministry of MSME, as of February 2026, over 7.83 crore enterprises were registered on the Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform. In under 5 years, the number of registrations has increased from 79 lakh in FY 2021-22, signifying one of the largest formalization initiatives for small businesses globally.
These numbers are not just a result of increasing business activity. They demonstrate an emerging awareness by entrepreneurs of the value of working in the formal economy.
Digital Reforms Have Changed the Way Businesses Start
Digital reforms have transformed the way businesses begin. The government's emphasis on digital governance is one of the key drivers of this increase.
It wasn't long ago that registering a business required a visit to many departments and plenty of paperwork. Many of the steps can now be done online, such as:
● Company incorporation
● GST registration
● Udyam registration
● Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
● Director Identification Number (DIN)
● PAN and TAN allotment
This has simplified the business formation process, cut down on the time required, and made it much less confusing.
Government data shows the extent of these digital changes. The Press Information Bureau states that the National Single Window System has issued over 8.29 lakh approvals, and the MCA21 platform received nearly 3.84 crore applications from 2021 to 2025. The GST Network transactions were valued at more than ₹102.91 lakh crore in January 2026.
These statistics demonstrate the role digital infrastructure plays in bringing millions of businesses into the formal economy.
MSMEs Are Powering India's Formal Economy
Small businesses continue to play a key role in the economic development of India, with a large proportion of new registrations belonging to these businesses.
Once registered on the Udyam portal, MSMEs can avail of easier lending, government procurement, subsidy schemes, and priority lending. What is more important, it provides businesses with increased visibility and credibility in the formal market.
The results are already evident.
The Udyam dashboard estimates that the MSME sector contributes to almost 39 crore jobs in India. The more MSMEs that register, the more they will have access to financial support and development opportunities.
Looking Ahead
The formal economy is growing at an unprecedented rate in India, and it is evident in the business registration pattern in the country. Digital governance, easier rules and favourable government policies have given a boost to millions of entrepreneurs to formalize their businesses.
This change is expected to be a key factor in fostering investment, employment creation, and business confidence as India transitions to a $5 trillion economy by 2027.
