How to Prepare Your Child for a First Chess Tournament: A Parent’s Guide from the Prime Engage Jr. Chess Championship

Sooner or later, a child who loves chess at home asks for a real tournament, and parents wonder whether their child is ready. Readiness has less to do with rating than with enjoyment and a few good habits. This guide draws on the Prime Engage Jr. Chess Championship, a national junior event that has held city qualifiers in more than a dozen cities and where no rating is needed to play.

Start with the right age category

Junior tournaments group children by age so that a six-year-old isn’t paired against a fifteen-year-old. The championship uses four categories: Under 8, Under 10, Under 12 and Under 16. Under 8 means younger than eight, so five-, six- and seven-year-olds are welcome. Check each event’s rules for how age is counted on the day before you register.
