Why storage matters to solar power
Solar generation depends on sunlight, which means electricity production varies throughout the day. Battery energy storage systems can store electricity for later use, helping address the gap between periods of generation and demand. Storage is therefore an important part of the wider effort to integrate renewable energy into power systems.
Luno’s proposed facility includes a 1.2 GW battery energy storage system manufacturing line, alongside planned capacities of 2.4 GW each for solar cells and modules and 1.2 GW for inverters. The company’s first-phase estimates also envisage approximately 250 lithium batteries per day. This daily estimate should be read as a planned production figure; the company has not specified the separate commissioning date for the battery line.
An integrated solar and storage ecosystem
The proposed park is designed to bring generation equipment and storage manufacturing together. Solar cells form the basis of photovoltaic modules, while inverters support the conversion of electricity for use in electrical systems. Battery storage adds another component to the overall solution by enabling electricity to be retained for later use.
This integrated model is intended to support coordination across manufacturing stages and allow the company to develop a broader offering for solar and storage applications. It also aligns with India’s wider renewable-energy ambitions, where increasing the share of variable renewable sources makes system flexibility and storage increasingly relevant.
“Solar generation and energy storage address different but connected needs. As India expands renewable energy, developing manufacturing capabilities in both areas can help strengthen the wider ecosystem required to produce, manage and use clean electricity,” said Dr Vivek Bindra, entrepreneur and investor.
Phased development
Luno expects module manufacturing to begin within three months of the groundbreaking and the first batch of solar cells within nine months, subject to project execution. The overall facility is planned to be developed in phases.
The project remains under development, but its proposed battery-storage line demonstrates that Luno’s manufacturing plans extend beyond solar panels to include a technology that can support the broader integration of renewable energy.
