The artist on the other side of the microphone has a story that doesn't begin on a stage or inside a recording studio. It begins much earlier — with a young woman from around Kolkata who had a very clear idea of what she wanted to do, even when she didn't have all the resources to do it.
Music became part of her life long before there was an audience waiting to hear it.
Kass started creating from her room, working around college, education and the realities of having a professional career. There was no large team quietly handling everything in the background. Much of what people eventually hear and see from her has involved Kass herself.
She writes her songs.
She works with production.
She gets involved in direction and visuals.
She thinks about how a release should look, feel and reach people.
And then she goes back to her regular working life.
That is perhaps the part fans don't immediately see when they discover an artist through a song.
The polished release is only the final few minutes of a much longer process.
Behind it are late nights, ideas that don't work, rewriting, recording, figuring things out independently and learning how to turn something that exists in your head into something another person can experience.
For Keya, that process has been as important as the final song.
She didn't enter music with the intention of simply being the person who sings someone else's words. Songwriting became particularly important because it allowed her to put her own experiences into the music.
A lot of what she has been going through personally has found its way into her releases this year.
Instead of separating her personal life from her art, she has been doing something much more instinctive — taking those experiences, emotions and difficult moments and moulding them into music.
“When it comes to creating art, that's how I express myself,” she says.
That explains something about the person behind the artist.
Kass isn't particularly interested in making music that exists only for the sake of being released. She wants there to be something real behind it.
Something she has lived.
Something she has felt.
Something that another person might recognize in themselves.
That connection is also why her latest releases have felt increasingly personal.
Her newest single, “Dekhta Raha,” explores what it feels like when people closest to you see you hurting and choose not to stop it. It is a vulnerable subject, but one that Kass chose to put into a song rather than leave as a private experience.
For listeners discovering her now, that may be one of the most interesting things about Keya Kass.
The person behind the microphone is not entirely separate from the music.
The experiences become the lyrics.
The emotions become the melodies.
The difficult moments become stories.
And the stories become something she can share with an audience.
There is also a certain curiosity that comes with watching an artist build independently. How does she manage a professional career and music at the same time? How did the girl creating from her room end up in professional studios? What happens between writing a song and releasing it? And who is the person behind the songs when the music stops playing?
Those are the questions that make Kass's journey worth following.
Because the more listeners hear her music, the more they begin to discover the person who made it.
And right now, that story is moving quickly.
With five singles released in 2026, more music on the way and her latest release “Dekhta Raha” now available across digital music platforms, Keya Kass is giving audiences more pieces of that story with every release.
The microphone may be where people first hear her.
But it is everything that happens before she steps up to it that tells you who Keya Kass really is.
