In the early hours of Monday morning February 6th, 2023, a major earthquake rocked southeastern Turkey near the Syrian border and was followed by equally devastating aftershocks. The death toll has risen to over 35,000, with more than 50,000 injured. Over a million people require aid to survive the bitterly cold conditions including clean water, food, shelter and medical care.
Large earthquake-induced injuries range from mild cuts and bruises to more serious conditions such as severe fractures, internal organ damage, crush syndrome, and burns(1). The disruption to medical facilities can lead to long delays in treatment and a strain on medical supplies for those that seek regular care while injured patients are being triaged. There is a major impact to those who suffer from chronic wound care issues that require medical care for their chronic and complex wounds such as those with pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers and wounds from circulatory and lymphatic diseases.
