Saira Khan Case: Judge-Turned-Filmmaker Swati Chauhan Brings Landmark Triple Talaq Verdict to the Big Screen

Inspired by a Landmark Case

The film draws from the ordeal of a Muslim woman who was unilaterally divorced through triple talaq, separated from her children, while her husband continued to maintain that he had the right to four marriages. This conflict between personal religious law and India’s secular legal framework formed the core of Judge Chauhan’s landmark verdict, which has been woven into the screenplay with cinematic depth.

Cinema as the New Courtroom

Speaking about her transition, Chauhan shared:
“Certain prejudices in the system forced me to choose between privileges and principles. I chose the latter and opted out of judicial service. But my commitment to justice never wavered. For me, cinema became the new courtroom.”

After voluntarily retiring from judicial service, Chauhan pursued a diploma in filmmaking to bring such stories of courage and justice to the big screen.

While the film retains the soul of her 2014 judgment, it strictly respects privacy. Real names, locations, and identities have been withheld. The verdict in the film closely mirrors Chauhan’s ruling, while also incorporating creative liberties—new characters, timelines, and references to recent developments, including the ban on talaq-e-biddat and ongoing Supreme Court debates.

Guided by Karan Razdan’s cinematic experience, Chauhan has successfully translated her courtroom insights into a compelling narrative that raises urgent questions on justice, gender rights, and the evolving role of law in society.
