For a select few, those grueling years of thermodynamics, circuit theory, and coding weren't the foundation for a lifetime in IT—they were the staging ground for a massive artistic pivot. Some finished the four years out of familial duty; others walked out mid-way. But none of them stayed.
Here is a look at eight names who traded the stability of engineering for the wild unpredictability of the entertainment industry, and how they pulled off the transition.
1. Sushant Singh Rajput: The Genius Dropout
Leaving a degree halfway is the ultimate Indian parental nightmare, but walking away from it when you are academically elite is practically unheard of. Rajput wasn’t just an engineering student at Delhi College of Engineering; he had secured an All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) rank of 7 in 2003. He was in the top tier of the country’s brightest technical minds. Yet, in his third year, he dropped out completely to pursue theatre and dance. It was a clean, boat-burning break—a massive gamble that ultimately led him from television stardom to critical acclaim in Hindi cinema.
2. Taapsee Pannu: The Pragmatic Coder
While the film industry loves to romanticize the starving artist who risks it all, Pannu brings a refreshing dose of pragmatism to the table. A Computer Science Engineering graduate from Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology in New Delhi, she actually worked as a software engineer and even developed an app in college. When she pivoted to acting—starting in Telugu and Tamil cinema before dominating Hindi films—she brought that practical mindset with her. Pannu is one of the few stars who actively advises newcomers to have a "Plan B," proving that having a safety net doesn't diminish your drive to succeed; it just keeps you from crashing.
3. Abhiraj Gupta: The Self-Made Multi-Hyphenate
Gupta’s pivot is perhaps the most grounded reality check on this list. Hailing from Banda and studying Civil Engineering in Lucknow, he left his degree to train at Kishore Namit Kapoor’s acting institute in Mumbai. Coming from a family of government servants and professionals, with absolutely no film industry background or nepotistic support, Gupta faced the harsh, unglamorous realities of the audition circuit head-on. Rather than waiting endlessly for a magic break, he took a highly pragmatic detour: he returned to Uttar Pradesh and built an import-export business from scratch to secure his financial freedom. That independence allowed him to fund his true creative pursuits on his own terms. Today, he is a certified radio jockey and a self-taught composer, having written and co-composed the music video Aao Chalo (released on Times Music) and single-handedly written and composed Sukoon Hai (released on Zee Music Videos). He is the rare artist who built his own safety net outside of both engineering and the film industry.
4. Kartik Aaryan: The Geographical Hacker
For anyone outside Maharashtra, half the battle of making it in Bollywood is simply finding a way to live in Mumbai. Aaryan, hailing from a family of doctors in Gwalior, used his engineering degree as the ultimate cover story. He enrolled in a Biotechnology Engineering program at D. Y. Patil College in Navi Mumbai, a move that gave him a legitimate reason to be in the city while he secretly hunted for auditions. He famously landed his debut in Pyaar Ka Punchnama while still enrolled, pulling off the incredibly rare feat of finishing his technical degree while simultaneously launching a blockbuster acting career.
5. Vicky Kaushal: The Cubicle Escapee
Kaushal is one of the few on this list who actually sat in the cubicle. After graduating with a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from Mumbai’s Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, he took on an engineering job. Even though his father is a well-known action director, his family still prioritized the traditional safety of a technical degree. When Kaushal finally decided the 9-to-5 life wasn't for him, he didn't use his industry connections for a shortcut to the spotlight. Instead, he took the long, grueling route of assisting behind the camera and doing theatre, letting his craft speak for itself.
6. Riteish Deshmukh: The Design Bridge
Architecture sits on the fascinating border between hard engineering and visual art, which makes Deshmukh the exception on this list: he never entirely abandoned his discipline. After graduating from Kamla Raheja College of Architecture, he actually practiced at an overseas firm for a year. Navigating the heavy expectations of a powerful political family (his father was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra), his jump into comedy and cinema was a major departure from the expected script. Yet, the spatial awareness and design sensibilities he learned in college still inform his creative work and his ongoing architectural projects today.
7. Kriti Sanon: The Patient Finisher
There is a specific kind of mental endurance required to finish a grueling four-year B.Tech in Electronics and Communication when you already know you are destined for something else. Sanon attended the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology in Noida—a classic pipeline for the NCR tech sector. Somewhere around her second year, her focus shifted toward modeling. But instead of dropping out, she quietly completed the degree, securing the ultimate Indian family insurance policy before making a clean break into Telugu cinema, and eventually taking Bollywood by storm.
8. Sonu Sood: The Marathon Runner
Sood’s journey is a testament to the long game. After completing his Electronics Engineering degree at Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering in Nagpur, he didn't find overnight success in Mumbai. Instead, he built a formidable, years-long career across the Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada film industries before Hindi audiences fully recognized his talent. His technical degree was left far behind as he mastered the art of crossing regional industry borders—a hustle that eventually paved the way for his unprecedented, real-life humanitarian role during the pandemic.
