How Varun Kumar Turned a Passion for Sneakers Into Swagger Hub
India | Business, Fashion & E-Commerce — Special Feature
India's relationship with sneakers has changed dramatically over the past decade. What was once purely athletic footwear has become a marker of identity, style and cultural belonging for young Indians, shaped by global media, celebrity culture and a generation eager to express itself through what it wears. Entrepreneur Varun Kumar built Swagger Hub around this shift, launching the venture in 2017 with the goal of bringing premium, internationally inspired sneakers and fashion accessories within reach of Indian shoppers.
At the time, the domestic sneaker market was still finding its footing. Large parts of the country had limited exposure to the sneaker releases, collaborations and style movements that were already shaping fashion conversations in cities like London, New York and Seoul. Kumar saw a clear gap between what was trending globally and what was easily available to Indian consumers, and set out to close that gap through careful sourcing, an eye for quality, and a deliberate focus on keeping products accessible rather than exclusive to a small niche.
Central to the brand's outlook from day one was a simple but deliberate idea: sneakers are not just something you wear on your feet, but a way of expressing who you are. That philosophy shaped everything from which products Swagger Hub chose to stock to how the company talked about itself publicly. Rather than positioning sneakers purely as sportswear, the brand leaned into the idea of footwear as a form of personal storytelling — confidence, individuality and self-expression woven into everyday style choices.
Swagger Hub built its catalogue by importing sneakers and accessories from several countries, with the team tracking international style movements closely to keep the assortment current rather than static. This meant treating product curation as an ongoing process rather than a one-time decision, revisiting what customers wanted as global trends shifted from season to season. As the company grew alongside India's booming online retail sector, it also invested heavily in the parts of the business customers feel most directly — smooth ordering, dependable delivery, and responsive support whenever something needed attention after a purchase.
That approach appears to be paying off in measurable terms. The company reports having processed more than one million orders and built a customer base exceeding 200,000 people, milestones that point to sustained demand from India's increasingly style-conscious youth rather than a short-lived spike driven by a single trend or campaign. Reaching that scale, Kumar suggests, has required consistency across thousands of individual transactions rather than any single breakout moment.
Kumar credits the brand's momentum to the broader cultural moment unfolding across Indian fashion: streetwear, celebrity style, sports and social media creators have together pushed sneakers into the centre of everyday fashion for young Indians, in much the same way they have in other major markets. Swagger Hub, he says, intends to keep evolving with that audience — adding new collections and accessories while keeping quality and service at the core of the business rather than chasing trends purely for visibility.
Looking forward, the company says it wants to deepen its footprint in India's sneaker and lifestyle segment through fresh product drops, wider reach across the country, and a continually improving shopping experience, with an ambition of becoming a globally recognised name in the category over time. For Kumar, the mission remains focused on customer trust — something he describes as harder to keep than to earn in the first place, and central to everything Swagger Hub plans to do next as it enters its next phase of growth.
