Dr. Gayatri Gogoi, MD, IFCAP, Professor of Pathology at Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, is one such rare luminary whose life’s work reflects purpose far beyond professional milestones.
With over 25 years of experience in pathology, cancer research, and diagnostics, Dr. Gogoi’s academic journey is anchored in excellence. A graduate and post-graduate of Assam Medical College, she has received advanced training at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including Tata Memorial Hospital and ACTREC, Mumbai, and Harvard Medical School, USA, where she specialized in precision oncology and cancer genetics. Her expertise spans histopathology, cytopathology, hematology, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and molecular pathology, with focused research interests in breast cancer, gall bladder cancer, blood cancers, and vaccine-related oncology research.
Currently serving as Professor of Pathology at AMCH and Adjunct Faculty at ICMR–Regional Medical Research Centre, North East India, Dr. Gogoi has played a pivotal role in establishing and successfully operating the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory at AMCH for over 13 years. She is an International Fellow of the College of American Pathologists (IFCAP) and an active life member of esteemed global bodies such as the American Association for Cancer Research and the European Society of Medical Oncology.
A landmark moment in her research career came when her work was featured by the BBC for detecting an extremely rare genetic mutation in the world’s largest hereditary blind family from Assam. This breakthrough brought international attention to genetic research emerging from Northeast India and highlighted Dr. Gogoi’s expertise in molecular diagnostics and clinical sequencing of rare diseases.
Beyond academia, what truly defines Dr. Gogoi is her unwavering commitment to society. She is a Founder Member and Honorary Program Director of Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust, a nonprofit organization that has become a lifeline for thousands of cancer-affected families across Assam. Offering free 24×7 cancer consultations, largely over phone, she personally assists nearly 100 patients every month — amounting to over 8,000 consultations to date.
Under her leadership, Pratishruti has implemented transformative initiatives. The HPV Vaccination Project achieved a national record by administering 3,000 vaccines within seven months. The Palliative Home Care Project has supported over 4,000 families, while the Cancer Helpline Project has assisted more than 8,000 patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Gogoi conceptualized the COVID Sentinel Project, monitoring over 56,000 individuals in home isolation in collaboration with Assam Police — a model nationally recognized for innovation.
An accomplished researcher, she has completed 12 funded research projects and currently leads seven ongoing studies. With over 55 national and international publications, 565 citations, and an h-index of 14, her work continues to shape cancer diagnostics and prevention strategies. Her Self Breast Examination Training Model, registered under the Government of India, reflects her commitment to early detection and community empowerment.
