How AI Could Reshape Flight Booking for Indian Travellers

Vilfly Travel Technologies is betting that the next wave of competition in India's online travel space won't be fought on price alone — but on how well platforms help travellers make sense of their choices.
Beyond the Lowest Number on Screen
Rather than functioning as another price-comparison engine, Vilfly is developing an AI-enabled platform designed to interpret what a traveller actually needs — not just what they type into a search box. A parent travelling with young children might prioritise flexible cancellation and baggage allowance over saving a few hundred rupees. A business traveller may care more about minimal layovers and precise timing. A budget-conscious student may want the lowest realistic total cost, fees included.
The company's premise: travel platforms have gotten better at generating more search results, but not necessarily better at helping people choose between them.
Why Two Sites Show Different Prices for the Same Flight
One of the more persistent sources of traveller confusion, according to Vilfly, is price discrepancy — the same flight appearing at different rates across websites due to negotiated fares, promotional inventory, or differing fare sources. The company says AI can play a role not just in surfacing the cheapest number, but in helping travellers understand why prices differ and what trade-offs come attached to a lower fare.
A Push Beyond India's Metros
Vilfly's strategy also reflects a broader shift in India's travel market: growing adoption of digital booking in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where travellers may be less inclined to spend time cross-checking multiple platforms before booking. A more guided, technology-led booking experience, the company argues, could particularly benefit this segment.
AI as an Assistant, Not a Decision-Maker
Notably, Vilfly is positioning its AI ambitions with a caveat: the technology is meant to inform, not override, traveller choice. The company says the final decision — on price, baggage, cancellation terms, and timing — should always rest with the customer, with AI serving to make those trade-offs clearer rather than making the call on someone's behalf.
The Bigger Bet
Through its two platforms, Vilfly.com and Vilfly.in, the company is positioning itself as a technology-first player in a crowded OTA market, betting that as competition intensifies, differentiation will increasingly come from how well a platform helps travellers understand their options — not just how many options it shows them.
Whether that thesis holds will depend on execution. But it reflects a broader question facing India's online travel industry: as AI tools become more accessible, will the next competitive edge come from cheaper fares, or clearer ones?
